What is Individual Therapy?

An individual therapy session is a form of therapeutic intervention where an individual meets one-on-one with a trained mental health professional to address personal issues, emotional challenges, and psychological concerns. The primary goal of individual therapy is to provide a safe, supportive and confidential environment in which individuals can openly explore their thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and experiences, ultimately leading to improved mental and emotional well-being.

Individual therapy sessions are either facilitated long-term or short-term. The client must feel safe and respected throughout the entire therapeutic process in order to receive the maximum benefits of individual therapy. Client is encouraged to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in depth. Depending on the individual needs of each client, the therapist will work with the individual to develop appropriate coping skills, treatment goals, and a customised treatment plan to deal with situations the client is facing. Therapists may use various therapeutic approaches and techniques based on the individual’s needs and the therapist’s training. Common therapeutic modalities include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT), psychoanalytic therapy, humanistic therapy, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and more.

Individual therapy can be beneficial for a wide range of individuals and situations. It’s important to trust your instincts and seek help when you feel it’s necessary for your well-being. Seeking therapy is a proactive step toward improving your mental and emotional well-being.

FAQs

Individual therapy involves a one-on-one session between a client and therapist or counselor in a private setting. This specific level of care offers clients the private atmosphere to begin working on mental health issues such as trauma, PTSD, anxiety issues, depression, substance abuse, as well as substance abuse aftercare counseling. Individual counseling also assists with a wide range of other stressors like new motherhood, grief and loss, employment changes or returning to work after the birth of a child, school and education, sports and general life adjustments.

Individual counseling is beneficial for anyone who is seeking to enhance their personal feelings with themselves and the world around them. For some, the need for individual therapy is obvious. Clients tend to seek help when they are struggling with a major event such as trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, or any other looming mental health issue. However, the need for therapy may not be as obvious and often times these individuals will shrug off the suggestion of therapy.
