What is Family Therapy?

A family therapy session involves a session where multiple members of a family, typically immediate family members, come together with a trained therapist to address and work through issues within the family system. Family therapy aims to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen relationships within the family unit.

Family therapy views the family as a system, where each member’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviours are interconnected and influence the overall dynamics. Family therapy addresses specific issues that affect the psychological well being of a family regardless of whether one believes it’s an individual or family issue. By providing mediation and the ability to influence conversation in a way that is productive, a therapist is able to assist in addressing many family issues.

Family therapy may include all family members or just those who are willing to participate. Family therapy teaches each individual the necessary skills to strengthen family connections and to overcome difficult circumstances in a healthy manner. Family therapy services often improve troubled relationships with family members including children, spouses or siblings.

During a family therapy session, the therapist creates a safe and supportive environment for family members to express their thoughts, emotions, and concerns. The therapist facilitates open and constructive dialogue among family members, helping them understand each other’s perspectives and dynamics within the family.
